Business Tycoons of India


All Indian business leaders were not born with a silver spoon in their mouth. The one who chose to become an heir of an established business empire, made sure to equip themselves academically to take up all the hurdles and challenges in future. Listed are the educational qualifications of top Indian business leaders.

Ratan Tata

The Chairman of Tata Groups, Ratan Tata started his schooling at Campion School and finished at Cathedral and John Connon School both in Bombay. He completed his B.S. in architecture with structural engineering from Cornell University in 1962, and the Advanced Management Program from Harvard Business School in 1975. He is a part of the Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity.

Chanda Kochhar

Chanda Kochhar is currently the Managing Director (MD) of ICICI Bank and Chief Executive Officer (CEO). She completed her schooling from St. Angela Sophia School, Jaipur. She then moved to Mumbai, where she joined Jai Hind College for a Bachelor of Arts degree. After graduating in 1982 she then pursued Cost Accountancy ICWAI. Later, she acquired the Masters Degree in Management Studies from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai. She received the Wockhardt Gold Medal for Excellence in Management Studies as well as the J. N. Bose Gold Medal in Cost Accountancy for highest marks in the same year.


Mukesh Ambani

Mukesh Ambani was educated at Abaay Morischa School in Mumbai and completed his graduation with a bachelor`s degree in chemical engineering from the UDCT, now Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai. He stood sixth in the University exams. He later enrolled for an MBA from Stanford University but completed only one year of the two year program and dropped out in the year 1980. Indira Gandhi administration threw open the doors of PFY (polyester filament yarn) manufacturing to the private sector in early 1980. Dhirubhai Ambani had applied for a license to set up PFY manufacturing plant. As Dhirubhai was awarded the licence, so to help him build the PFY plant, he pulled his eldest son Mukesh out of Stanford where he was studying for his MBA. Mukesh then dropped out to help his father and kicked off Reliance’s backward integration from textiles into polyester fibres and further into petrochemicals, beginning in 1981. In 2010, Mukesh Ambani has been conferred the 'Degree of Doctor of Science Honoris Causa' by M.S University, Baroda, Gujarat.

Vinita Bali

Vinita Bali, the Managing Director of Britannia Industries, received her Bachelor's Degree in Economics from LSR at the University of Delhi and her MBA at the Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies at Bombay University. She pursued postgraduate studies in Business and Economics at Michigan State University and served as an intern at United Nations Headquarters.


Deepak Parekh

The Chairman of Housing Development Finance Corporation, Deepak Parekh, started off his career with Ernst & Young Management Consultancy Services in New York. After returning to India, he worked with Grindlays Bank and also Chase Manhattan Bank as its assistant representative for South Asia.

Kalpana Morparia

Kalpana Morparia is Chief Executive Officer of J.P. Morgan, India. She is graduate in law from Bombay University and completed her Bachelor of Science from Sophia College, Mumbai.


Kumar Mangalam Birla

Kumar Mangalam Birla is the Chairman of the Aditya Birla Group. A chartered accountant by profession, he earned his commerce degree from HR College of Commerce and Economics, Mumbai and also has an MBA from the London Business School, where he is an Honorary Fellow. He also has several honorary doctorate degrees.

Kiran Majumdar Shaw

Kiran Majumdar Shaw is the Chairman & Managing Director of Biocon Limited a biotechnology company based in Bangalore. Mazumdar-Shaw completed her schooling from the city’s Bishop Cotton Girl’s High School (1968). She wanted to join medical school but instead took up biology and completed her BSc Zoology Honours course from Mount Carmel College, Bangalore University (1973). She later did her post-graduation in Malting and Brewing from Ballarat College, Melbourne University (1975).


Anand Mahindra

Anand Mahindra is the Chairman and Managing Director of one of India’s largest enterprise, Mahindra & Mahindra. He graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College, Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1977, where he was a member of the Phoenix S.K. Club and completed his MBA from Harvard Business School, Boston, Massachusetts in 1981. According to October 26, 2011 rankings of Forbes, his net worth is U.S. $825 million and is ranked 68 in India's rich list.

Mallika Srinivasan

Mallika Srinivasan, the Chairman and CEO of TAFE, is the pride of her parents. She was always brilliant in academics. She did her in MA (econometrics) from Madras University. Thereafter, she went abroad to pursue further studies. She did her MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.


Sunil Mittal

Telecom tycoon Sunil Bharti Mittal is the founder, Chairman and Group CEO of Bharti Enterprises. Born in Ludhiana, Punjab, India, He first joined the Wynberg Allen School in Mussoorie, but later attended Scindia School at Gwalior and he graduated in 1976 from Punjab University, Chandigarh, with a Bachelor of Arts and Science for which he studied in Arya College for Boys, a local college in Ludhiana. He is also an alumnus of Harvard Business School, U.S.A.

Naina Lal Kidwai

Naina Lal Kidwai is the Group General Manager and Country Head of HSBC India. She is a Chartered Accountant by profession, later earned a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from University of Delhi and an MBA from Harvard Business School. She was the first Indian woman to graduate from Harvard Business School. From 1982-1994 she worked at ANZ Grindlays, where her assignments included Head of the Investment Bank, Head of Global NRI Services and Head of the Western India, Retail Bank.


Anil Dhirubhai Ambani

The chairman of Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group, one of the largest private conglomerates, Anil Dhirubani completed his Bachelor’s degree from University of Bombay followed by Master of Business Administration degree from University of Pennsylvania Wharton School

Neelam Dhawan

Neelam Dhawan is the Managing Director of Hewlett-Packard India. She embraces a bachelor's degree in Economics from St.Stephen's College, New Delhi, and a Masters in Business Administration from the Faculty of Management Studies, Delhi University.


N.R. Narayan Murthy

N. R. Narayana Murthy, Chairman Emeritus of Infosys, graduated with a degree in electrical engineering from the National Institute of Engineering, University of Mysore in 1967. He received his master's degree from IIT Kanpur in 1969.

Dr. Preetha Reddy

Dr. Preetha Reddy is the Managing Director, Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Limited. Dr. Preetha Reddy holds a B.Sc from Stella Maris College Chennai, and a Masters in Public Administration from Madras University.


Azim H Premji

Azim H Premji, Chairman, Wipro holds an electrical engineering degree from Stanford University, U.S.A. Premji has been recognized by Business Week as one of the Greatest Entrepreneurs for being responsible for Wipro emerging as one of the world’s fastest growing companies. In 2000, he was conferred an honorary doctorate by the Manipal Academy of Higher Education.

Roopa Kudva

Roopa Kudva is Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer of CRISIL and also the Region Head, South Asia, Standard & Poor's. She is a graduate in Statistics and a post-graduate in management from IIM, Ahmedabad.


Shiv Nadar

The Founder and Chairman of HCL and the Shiv Nadar Foundation, Shiv Nada, received a pre-University degree in The American College, Madurai and degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore. He began his career at Walchand Group's Cooper Engineering in Pune in 1967.

Sulajja Firodia Motwani

Sulajja Firodia Motwani is the Joint Managing Director of Kinetic Engineering and Director, Kinetic Motors. She completed her B.Com from Pune University (1990). On completing her MBA from Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburg in 1992, she joined Barra International, California, an investment consulting firm in the U.S. (1992-94). She became the Senior Consultant, BARRA (1994-97), Head of Indian Operations, BARRA (1996-97 and moved on to her family business to become General Manager, Corporate Affairs, Kinetic Engineering Limited (1997).
