Vickers Vanguard turboprop airliner

The very considerable success of the Vickers Viscount in airline service was due to the smoothness, economy and reliability of its turbine engines. In one enormous leap it had raised cruising speed almost 100% by comparison with the piston-engined Vickers Viking; it carried two or three times as many passengers (according to type) and offered increased range. In early 1953, not long after the Viscount entered service with British European Airways (BEA), discussions began to initiate the design of a successor. Both BEA and Trans-Canada Airlines were interested in a generally similar aircraft; compromise in design to satisfy the views of these two operators resulted in the low-wing configuration and 'double-bubble' fuselage to provide a large underfloor cargo hold beneath the main cabin.

The power plant considered originally for inclusion in the design was the Rolls-Royce Dart. But Rolls-Royce intimated that development of a new engine, the RB.109, was then well under way and it (later known as the Tyne) was chosen to power this new transport. Construction was entirely conventional except for the wing, which introduced integrally machined skins of light alloy to provide spanwise stiffening at low cost, and three shear webs instead of the single spar in the Viscount wing. When tied together by closely spaced ribs it produced a rigid box structure and outboard of the centre-section it was sealed to form integral fuel tanks.

First flight of the prototype Vanguard, as the new aircraft had been named, was made on 20 January 1959. But because of the normal development programme of a new civil airliner - coupled with delays caused by problems with the new power plant - it was not until 1 February 1961 and 1 March 1961 that these aircraft began regular service with Trans-Canada Airlines and BEA respectively. By then this and other second-generation turboprop-powered airliners had been deposed by the development and introduction into service of economical turbojet-powered airliners such as the Boeing Model 707. Consequently production ended after the original orders had been completed: 20 for BEA and 23 for Trans-Canada Airlines.

On 10 October 1969 the first of nine freighter conversions of the Vanguard, called Merchantman, was flown for BEA.

Moral Story - Thinking Positively

A teacher had given her class some really difficult problems in mathematics for homework. Ramesh said, “It is useless to try to solve these problems. I know I can’t do them,” and he shut his books and put them away. Malti said, “I must solve these problems. I know I can. If others can do it, so can I.”

Malti eventually succeeded in solving the problems. Ramesh didn’t even try to solve the sums because he didn’t have enough confidence in his ability to tackle the problems.

He can a person expect to achieve anything when he is constantly saying to himself, “I can’t do this thing,”? A person who thinks he can’t do his lessons, who decides that he can’t do his lessons, who decides that he can’t solve his problems, who is sure he can’t get through school, will never be able to do any of these things. He becomes a victim of negative thinking. He destroys his won self-confidence, self-respect and morale. His achievements will never rise higher than his weak, negative thoughts.

Contrast him with a person who always says, “I will.” No matter what obstacle he comes across, he says, “I will do this. I will be successful.” It is his constant positive thoughts which increase his confidence in himself. They give him the ability to tackle any task, no matter how difficult it seems.

The power to do anything at all depends on your faith in yourself. No mater what task you undertake, you will never master it until you think you can. You must repel negative thoughts which can rob you of this power. As long as you allow negative, destructive ideas to enter you mind, you will remain a mediocre person, perhaps even a failure. Negative thoughts are the enemies of people who want to succeed.

“Only he can who think he can.” The world makes way for determined people who have self-confidence and assurance. It is not easy to stop a man who has firm faith in his abilities and who is convinced that he can overcome any obstacle in his way.

You can do a difficult thing only if you have a positive state of mind. If you get into a tight situation and say, “I will,” or “I can,” or I must,” you will reinforce your determination and strengthen your confidence. But if you say, “What will be, will be. It all depends no your stars,” you will not be able to overcome your obstacles. Discipline yourself to think positively.

Babar, the great Mughal king, was afraid of the dark when he was a child. One day, a playmate defied him to enter a dark cave. Babar was frightened, but he desperately wanted to prove that he was not a coward. He said to himself, “I am absolutely fearless; there is nothing to fear; God will protect me; nothing can harm me.” He entered the dark cave repeating these words to himself. He was never again afraid of the dark. He had strengthened his courage by positive thoughts. He overcame his fear by convincing himself that he was brave.

Trust yourself and think of ways and means of doing the job rather than lamenting your handicaps or pitying yourself. A person who thinks positively will achieve success and happiness. You can inspire confidence in others only if you have confidence in your own ability to achieve success in your task.

However, everybody has limitations. A person must realize what he is capable of achieving, and what is beyond his reach. A person might be aspiring to become a poet but he may be more capable of becoming a successful architect or painter or businessman. Unrealistic goals can lead of frustrations which can be avoided if a person keeps his capabilities in mind.

The Victa Aircruiser

Type

Four seat light aircraft
History

The Victa Aircruiser was designed by Dr Henry Millicer, who had earlier designed the two seat Victa Airtourer (described separately), the most popular light aircraft designed and built in Australia. With Airtourer production in full swing in the early 1960s Victa commissioned Dr Millicer to develop a four seat light aircraft based on the Airtourer. This resulted in the Aircruiser 210CS, which flew for the first time on July 17 1966. The Aircruiser was later awarded full Australian certification equivalent to US FAR Part 23 standards.
The Aircruiser showed considerable promise and looked a worthy competitor to American four seaters, however Victa withdrew from light aircraft production in January 1967 due to the Airtourer's inability to compete on price against alleged dumped imports to Australia, and the design and production rights to the Airtourer and Aircruiser were sold to AESL of New Zealand in 1970. AESL continued to build the Airtourer and used the Aircruiser as the basis for its CT-4 Airtrainer (described separately) but did not put the Aircruiser into production.
In 1994 Tony Peters, a flying school proprietor in Mount Gambier in South Australia, commissioned a market study into two and four seat light aircraft demand in Australia which found there existed a significant market for new aircraft. A syndicate was formed to purchase the Aircruiser design and type certificate, with Millicer Aircraft Industries established to place an upgraded development of the Aircruiser into production as the M-9-200 Shrike. The Shrike name was dropped in 1998 in favour of AirCruiser (with an upper case "C").
Originally plans envisaged the first M-9-200 being delivered in mid 1997 but minor delays and the decision to acquire the Airtourer design and place it into production as a priority meant that the first M-9-200 - the rebuilt Aircruiser prototype - was not due to fly until September 1999 with first customer deliveries planned for 2000. AirCruisers and AirTourers would be built in a new, purpose designed factory in Sale in Victoria.
Compared with the original Victa Aircruiser, the M-9-200 AirCruiser would have featured a fuel injected IO-360 engine, standard GPS, new wheels, brakes and controls. A retractable undercarriage variant was also planned.
However, in late 2000 Millicer ceased trading due to financial difficulties, before the M-9-200 had been flown. So, to the present day, only one Aircruiser was built.
